HDR playback, colors washed out

Hi Folks,

I'm running the latest smplayer which ships with Ubuntu 20.04 (whatever the current update is) and mpv. I'm having trouble with 4K HDR video. I have an HDR screen and my display color depth is set to 30 (bits). On VLC the colors are fine, however with smplayer / mpv the colors are washed out. Is smplayer/mpv able to send HDR data to the display device? Is there some setting I should be looking at?

Further investigation indicates some interesting stuff. If I run in 4K DCI (4096x2160) smplayer/mpv does display the correct color depth in both 24 and 30 bit mode, however running in 4K UHD (3840x2160) it doesn't. Any clues?
