/usr/bin/mplayer
I'm using the xv output driver but have tried using vdpau and many others, but I either get no video or the same thing.
Am I missing something obvious here?

MPEG-2 trouble

For some reason I am getting horrible video distortions with mpeg-2 video. I can play these files fine with xine, mplayer, or gnomemplayer without trouble which are all using the same mplayer binary.

Set the "threads for decoding" to 1. See if that fixes it.
