Youtube support in smplayer

Postby rvm » Thu Jan 19, 2012 1:48 am

Version: 0.6.10+SVN-r3727

Now it's possible to play youtube videos in smplayer.

Just go to Open -> Url and enter the link of the youtube page (or drag it from the web browser to the smplayer window).

You can select the preferred quality of the youtube videos in Preferences -> Performance. mp4 or webm formats are recommended. If a video is not available at your desired quality, another one will be automatically chosen.

There's also now a Favorites menu (still under development) where you can add your favorite files. You can also add youtube videos, just select the option "Add current media".

Please, test and report problems.

When watching Youtube videos in browser, we have a number of similar videos (at the right).
Are there any plans to realize similar behavior in SMPlayer?
This thing is realized in UMPlayer, SMPlayer's fork, and it would be very nice to see it in original player:

I think that would be better as a standalone application, so people not interested on youtube won't need to install it.

It seems "480p (mp4)" is missing from the preferences.

not all videos has 480p(or higher) quality. eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSUYxl3XRBo has 240p, 360p, 480p( http://o-o.preferred.bite-vno1.v5.lscac ... c65dd7441a ).

Oh, I didn't know 480p is never in mp4 format.

On another note, seeking is impossible. Is this normal? When I start playback, and I try to seek to, say, the middle of the video, playback stops and nothing happens.

It seems seeking is extremely slow with flv videos. That's why I recommend to use mp4 or webm.

I do have selected "720p (mp4)" in SMPlayer, but it picks the 480p FLV version if the video doesn't have 720p :-/
