In order to save to jpg, it's necessary a plugin. Be sure you have a file qjpeg4.dll in the imageformats directory inside the smplayer folder.

Why the preference for JPEG? PNG is lossless, unlike JPEG (which is lossy). You can save your images in the JPEG format easily afterwards with a different program. There will be no data loss.
