AC3 sound very poor

i use smplayer only for watching music videos and i must say that PCM sound plays good , nice volume but AC3 is very poor .ex let's say the volume is at 15 , PCM is great but AC3 it's like muted or something...and this only happens with smplayers (all other i tested work fine) so what do you think it might be?
