The skinnable gui is grayed out if smplayer can't find the skins. The skins are in another package:

I have now created a Gentoo ebuild for the skins. I've put it in the "multimedia" overlay (http://gitorious.org/gentoo-multimedia). I also modified the smplayer live ebuild there to install the skins ("skins" USE flag, it's enabled by default.)

I will also submit this to portage and hopefully it will be included soon, so that all users will get the skinable GUI.

It seems the xmlrpc interface for opensubtitles allows to download the subtitles already uncompressed, so probably I will be able to get rid of the quazip dependency.

Since r5423 smplayer doesn't use quazip.
