Dear community,

I just have a quick question.

My laptop has special playback media keys to pause/play/forward/backward the playback.

These keys work out of the box with other applications but not with SMPlayer.

I just want to make sure whether this is just not generally supported or whether the problem is on my end.

You'll probably need to disable the multimedia keys in the ubuntu preferences, otherwise smplayer won't receive the multimedia key events.

I did notice something very strange.

Please take a look at the following image. I disabled this key and enabled it again. And now suddenly, media hotkeys work even with SMPlayer!

I will test this further.

Do you have any idea how this could happen?

The reason why I don't want to disable these keys is that then all my other media players no longer work with media keys properly.

If you turn on the option "use the multimedia keys as global shortcuts" (*) in preferences -> keyboard, then maybe it wouldn't be necessary to turn off the multimedia keys in the ubuntu preferences.

(*) this option is only available if smplayer is compiled with Qt 5. You can find packages for Ubuntu built with Qt 5 here:

I am trying to find a version for 17.10 but could only find packages up to xUbuntu 16.10.

Is this smplayer_17.6.0-3.1_amd64.deb compiled against Qt5?
