maybe he's using latest version mpv. latest release of mpv doesn't work well with smplayer.
here, try this build with smplayer. you'll see problems: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpv-pl ... z/download

I think this is fixed in svn r9260.
You may also need to remove the file ~/.config/smplayer/player_info.ini
